Q: How do I get rid of SPAM?

A: Spam is truly a problem in todays Internet. There are many tools to get rid of unwanted mail, and they are better today than they used to be.

The method of getting rid of your unwanted SPAM will depend on your skill with rules and your desire/drive to get rid of the junk.

The most common methos of getting rid of SPAM is with SPAM protection software. This sounds easier than it can be. You must be sure that the progrma you are getting is not going to cause more problems. In the past three decades of working on computers, I have seen more and more programs that promise to get rid of all your problems but they just provide you with a whole new pallet of problems you never knew you could have.

Sysmantec/Norton provide a tool for getting rid of SPAM and there are a number of other programs out there that will do it for you.

One thing that most people may not realize, your Outlook Express and Eudora have mail rules that you can set up to get rid of some of the junk.

More ISPs (Internet Service Providers) provide the service of marking or geting rid of SPAM for you. When they mark it, the subject is prepended with "[SPAM]". You can set up a message rule to get rid of all e-mail that has "[SPAM]" in the subject and be rid of much of your problem with such ISPs.

One of the best ways to prevent SPAM from hitting a new e-mail box is to keep your address private. It is exciting to find out what everyone is offerring and give out your e-mail address, but when you receive over 1000 e-mails every day, you will regret it. Keep your address private.

Another way that you can prevent SPAM from hitting your mail box is to discourage people from sending you every joke they get and forward to everyone on their address book. This is very rude. That person has just broadcast your private (cause we are keeping it private now) address accross the internet. Despite what you think, email is not private and every address can be harvested as the e-mail travels accross the net. I get very rude and cross with people who fill my mail box up with really stupid junk. As it is, I receive between 1000 - 5000 e-mails every day. Thanks to extensive rules and protections, I only deal with about 20 - 50 a day. The rest are deleted or filed for me.

On last think to remember is that NO SPAM program is perfect. Whether it is SpamAssasin, AOL, Symantec/Norton or your own program, mail you want may find it's way to your junk folder and mail you don't want will make it to the inbox. Just be patient and realize that it is working most of the time, but be sure to go check the Junk folder occassionally.
